Joke (Feb 08) -

A man and a woman who have never met before find themselves in the same sleeping carriage of a train.
After the initial embarrassment they both go to sleep, the woman on the top bunk, the man on the lower.
In the middle of the night the woman leans over, wakes the man and says, "I'm sorry to bother you, but I'm awfully cold and I was wondering if you could possibly get me another blanket."
The man leans out and, with a glint in his eye, says, "I've got a better idea... just for tonight, let's pretend we're married."
The woman thinks for a moment. "Why not," she giggles.
"Great," he replies, "Get your own damn blanket!"

Recipe (Feb 08) - Cape Brandy Pudding

Cape brandy pudding (South African)
Pudding:
250g dried dates, stones removed and finely chopped
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
1 cup boiling water
125g margarine
200g sugar
2 eggs, beaten
240g cake flour
1 tsp baking powder
½ tsp salt
1 cup walnuts, chopped
Sauce:
300ml sugar (preferably brown)
1 tbsp margarine>br> 100ml water
150ml brandy
1 tsp vanilla essence
½ tsp salt
Whipped cream:
500ml UHT cream
2 tsp castor sugar
1 tsp vanilla essence

Divide chopped dates in half and add bicarb soda and boiling water to one half. Mix well and leave to cool (about 3/4 hour - this is important!).Cream margarine and sugar and then beat in eggs. Sift flour (remove weevils), baking powder and salt over margarine mixture and fold in. Add dry portion of dates and walnuts and blend well. Stir in soaked date mixture, blending thoroughly and turn into a large flat dish such as a baking dish (the pudding wont cook properly unless its shallow). Bake (180oC) for 40 min or until firm in middle.

To make sauce, heat sugar, water and margarine, stirring to dissolve sugar and then simmering for 5 mins. Remove from stove and stir in vanilla, salt and brandy. Pour over pudding as soon as it comes out of the oven, and serve hot or cold with whipped cream (i.e. add vanilla and sugar to cream and then beat until stiff).
